Established in the mid-1830s, First Christian Church is one of the oldest churches in Jackson. It was organized by General William Clark, a Christian preacher and native of North Carolina, who served as state treasurer from 1843-47. The church's first buildings occupied the northeast corner of President and Mississippi streets and later the corner of North State and High streets. It is now located at the corner of Briarwood Drive and Ridgewood Road.
First Christian Church is a congregation of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The Christian Church is one of the largest Protestant groups in the United States. Born on the American frontier in 1832, the Christian Church began as a movement calling for unity among all those who believe in Jesus and accept the Bible as the source of Christian learning and living. We proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior as taught in the Scriptures and revealed by the Holy Spirit. On other matters, we recognize the right of individuals to exercise their freedom of opinion.
The mission of First Christian Church is to worship God, to encourage growth in the Christian faith, and to reach out to each other and the world in witness and service. We seek simply to preach and practice the teachings of Jesus. Opportunities for fellowship and service include the Sunday worship service, Sunday school, Chancel Choir, women's and men's fellowship groups, Wednesday prayer service, Thursday night fellowship group, Bible study, and mission group. The Lord's Supper is central to each worship service and is open to all believers and seekers. We invite you to come and learn more about the God we serve.
